Koenigsegg has created a new race car - the CCGT, based on the production CC-model range. The CCGT complies with the ACO and FIA GT1 regulations.

The CCGT engine is based on the Koenigsegg CCX production engine with the superchargers removed but enlarged to 5.0 litre.

The reliability of the race engine is expected be exceptional as it is based on the proven strength and durability of the signifi cantly more powerful road car engine.

The minimum weight allowed for a GTI race car is 1,100 kg and most manufacturers struggle to meet this target, having to undergo massive weight saving programs.

Due to the fact the Koenigsegg CC cars are very light and stiff in road confi guration, the racing CCGT weighs in at just under an astounding 1,000 kg. This gives the possibility to place 100 kg of ballast freely within the car structure, still following the set rules. This should give Koenigsegg an interesting advantage over the competition.

The CCGT has very short overhangs, which could be seen as an issue when it comes to generating enough downforce. However, by further developing the clever and “slippery” design concept of the CC range, Koenigsegg believes they have created a unique package incorporating a surprising amount of down-force combined with a very compact package and optimal weight distribution. Since the CCGT has a short overall length and low overall height, whilst still maintaining adequate track width and length, it is thereby gifted with superior agility compared to most of the competition, which should be evident in future heated racing combats.

The Koenigsegg CCGT development team, headed by Dag Bolenius, has done a superb job by refining the CC into the CCGT.

The race engine is being developed in-house in parallel with the production units by Koenigsegg engineers, supported by Anders Hoglund from Cargine engineering and JP Motorsport.

The Spyker C12 Zagato is an all aluminium rear wheel drive sports car, based on the Spyker C12 Spyder. The C12 is powered by the 6.0 liter, 12 cylinder, 500 bph W12 engine from Volkswagen AG and accelerates from 0-100 km (0-60 mph) in 3.8 seconds. The Spyker C12 Zagato is equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic gear box with F1 style shifting, Chronoswiss instruments and a Zagato designed full leather interior with brushed aluminium instrument panel. The C12 Zagato has an aluminium body with stainless steel roof rails and has many F1 derived design details such as an F1 nose, air scoop, chimneys, mirrors, rain light, fuel flap and diffuser. It has a panoramic roof that features the Double Bubble, a typical Zagato style element. The Spyker C12 Zagato has a length of 4.5 m, a width of 2.02 m excluding mirrors, a height of 1.25 m and weighs 1480 kg. The fuel tank capacity is 70 litres (15.4 gallons). Top speed is 310 km/h (193 mph).

Maintaining Spyker’s styling philosophy, Zagato design put all these elements together and created an extremely stimulating example of contemporary exotic high performance sports car by using typical modern Zagato lines which started from the Raptor Zagato in 1996.”

Concepts New Opel GTC concept

The GTC concept's aggressive front end is emphasised by large aluminium vertical intakes that intersect the headlamps, elements that are mimicked in the rear exhaust outlets. The inclusion of LED lighting in the front and rear lamps propose a signature illumination graphic when the car prowls around at night. Outboard LED vertical driving lamps were also designed to communicate power and strength, while a rear diffuser is tucked beneath the rear bumper and an integrated bootlid spoiler.

Under the skin, the four-seat coupé is powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine claimed to create 300bhp and a maximum 295lb.ft of torque. Acceleration to 62mph is estimated to take six seconds and the car is alleged to reach a limited 155mph top speed. A six-speed manual transmission driving an electronically-controlled four-wheel drive system (with a rear bias) transmits power to the road.

The Opel GTC concept's interior is also a reflection of the carmaker's forthcoming brand identity. The interior shapes and surfaces are specifically designed to enhance driver ergonomics, with the dashboard top-pad flowing from the instrument panel to the door, enveloping the passenger compartment. Matte ebony surfaces are contrasted with high-gloss 'piano black' décor finish and aluminium accents, revealing the new Opel/Vauxhall aesthetics. Four round instrument gauges, encircled by translucent rings, are backlit in red, replacing the brand's traditional amber tones and communicating the added presence of the concept.

Seating is recessed into the structure for a more 'integrated' feeling for both front and rear occupants. The instrument panel is specifically designed to optimise outward visibility and provide a sense of space, an effect strengthened by its dark upper section and contrasting light lower section. Opel designers wanted to illustrate that a sleek coupé roofline need not hinder space or headroom. Despite the concept's flat roof, rear headroom is 920mm, largely attributed to the low mounted twin rear seats.

A unique "Flex4" system moves the backs of both rear seats forward and docks them separately to the front seats by remote control to optimise usability. The car can be transformed into a spacious three or two-seater with a flat load floor and up to 1020 litres of luggage compartment capacity, more than double the space afforded with the rear seats in place.

It's unlikely that the GTC will make production unchanged, but hopefully the new Vectra shares the concept's styling and stance.

2007 Ford Mondeo:
The Mondeo has a stellar reputation in the UK, having appeared in the nation's top 10 favourite cars every year since its launch in 1993 and selling more than 1.5 million example. First seen in prototype guise at the Paris motor show and then making a cameo in the latest James Bond film, the new Ford Mondeo has a lot to live up to. And it looks like it's got what it takes.

The latest iteration of the Mondeo employs Ford's 'kinetic design' language, creating a distinctive front end with bevelled corners and a deep offset between the top of the bonnet and the front wings. A muscular shoulder line accentuates the flanks - rising gradually toward the rear - while a strong undercut line runs from the front wheel arches through the side of the car.

Three distinct body styles will be available from launch: a saloon, five-door hatchback and an estate. Within these are four distinct trim levels: the entry-level Edge, mid-spec Zetec, and the top of the range Ghia and Titanium X models.

Power for the new Mondeo will be supplied by a range of Duratorq diesels and Duratec petrol engines. The diesel units can be specified in 1.8-litre or 2-litre guise, with power ratings between 99bhp and 138bhp. The low-range 1.8-litre will be fitted with a five-speed manual transmission and a six-speed will be available in the 123bhp version. The 2-litre can be ordered with either a six-speed manual or 'Durashift' automatic, but the auto option has just 128bhp.

Honda Concept:

You can’t see too much in the sketch (click above to enlarge), but this is a teaser for Honda’s intriguing new Small Hybrid Sports Concept that’ll be making its show debut at the Geneva Salon on March 6.

Under the lights at the Palexpo, Honda will lift the covers on this snug two-door hybrid coupe study and then stand back and see what the reaction turns out to be.

Honda’s not saying what’s under the hood, other than to say that it combines state-of-the art environmental hybrid technology with the kind of enjoyment found in a small sized sports car. We can take an educated guess, however, and say that if approved for production, it will come with front-drive and techy, next generation IMA hybrid powertrain, to take it all to the next level over the deliciously quirky, fantastically frugal 1.0-liter Insight which only recently went out of production.

Concept Cars-Dodge Demon

Dodge Demon Concept:
It’s no secret that DaimlerChrysler has high hopes for making Dodge a bigger player beyond its home market, which neatly explains the existence of the roadster above. Dubbed the “Demon,” this two-seat roadster will be unveiled next month in Geneva, and like most DCX concepts, it’s said to be a runner.

The Dodge Demon, as you might imagine, is aimed squarely at Mazda’s MX-5, as well as domestic competition from General Motors in the form of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. The rear-driver utilizes DCX’s 2.4-liter “world engine,” which kicks out 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque, routed through a conventional six-speed manual transmission.

It looks as if the Demon has a legitimate shot at production, despite riding on its own platform. Dodge officials first showed us animated images and sketches of the Demon late last year.

Saab Bio Power Concept:
Here's one in the eye for all those eco-whingers: a green car that also happens to have 300bhp.

The Saab BioPower 100 has the first production engine to do away with the need for any fossil fuels.

Instead, this 9-5 uses pure bioethanol (E100) and, thanks to bioethanol's higher octane rating, it also helps the engine generate more power.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged motor makes a very respectable 300bhp and 295lb ft of torque, whisking the Saab from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.

Saab will unveil the BioPower 100 at the Geneva motor show next month and says the car is a concept for the time being, but expect to see vehicles with this engine on sale within the next two years.

NAIAS 2007: Lexus IS-F :Lexus unveiled the IS-F high-performance luxury sedan at a press conference today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
The all-new 2008 IS-F high-performance luxury sedan will deliver more than 400 horsepower from a 5.0-liter V8 engine when it goes into production. This exciting new car make a dramatic statement of Lexus performance.

The "F" designation was first conceived nearly 20 years ago with a project internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." This was the original code for what became the Lexus Division. The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process.

"Lexus has long been perceived as the maker of mainstream luxury vehicles, but the unveiling of the IS-F not only changes this perception, it also introduces a new Lexus marque," said Bob Carter, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. "The 'F' shared by both vehicles is the signature for a new high-performance marque conceived by an engineering team that dared to turn their dream of 'a Lexus like no other' into a reality."

The IS-F will arrive at Lexus dealerships in early 2008.

Jaguar’s new XKR Coupé is being revealed to a new audience today at the Autosport International Show at the NEC, Birmingham, and in a new guise.
Buckingham-based Apex Motorsport, under the direction of Richard Lloyd, has developed the stunning XKR model for use in the FIA GT3 European Championship. It is being revealed in the ‘flesh’ for the first time to the world’s motorsport media at what is recognised to be globally one of the biggest and most successful motorsport shows.

The Jaguar XKR GT3, featuring a 4.2 litre V8 supercharged engine, retains the aluminium body of its production cousin, but has had modifications made in line with the regulations. Draft technical specifications are attached but the definitive specification will be revealed following the official FIA track tests, the first of which takes place at Monza on February 22/23.

Until recently, the German tuning company IMSA was not more than just an insider tip. But by now, it has achieved the ultimate breakthrough thanks to its rst product, the Gallardo GTV. After all, the company from Brüggen treated the Gallardo’s power unit like nobody dared before.

After this special treatment, the V10 power unit develops maximum output of 610 hp at 7900 rpm. In the near future, it will also be possible to experience this pleasure in an open car – since all GTV parts are now available for the Spyder as well.

Special emphasis was made on road capability.
In spite of the increased engine power and the high torque of 655 Nm at 5300 rpm, IMSA wanted the Gallardo to be suitable for every day use; it had to o er the best possible dri ving fun even under bad weather conditions. Therefore, the four-wheel drive – amongst other things – was adjusted to the new performance. Even during extreme driving manoeuvres, the Gallardo’s ne-tuned sport chassis o ers great stability and driving control. Concepts-2007 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Prototype

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today announced the world debut of the all-new, 2008 Lancer compact sedan, which reaches dealerships in March, and Prototype X, a concept vision of the next-generation Lancer Evolution that will become available in the first quarter of 2008.

In addition, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), announced plans to develop a next-generation common rail turbo-diesel engine, which is planned for launch in the new Lancer in 2010.

The 2007 NAIAS runs January 7-21 at the Cobo Center in Detroit and is open to the general public from January 13. In addition to the world-debut vehicles, Mitsubishi is displaying its entire 2007 model line at the show, including the all-new Outlander SUV, the exciting new Galant Ralliart performance sedan and the new Eclipse Spyder. Volkswagon Barbie Pink Beetle

In a word, the New Beetle is cute. Okay, the Turbo is reasonably fun, and the not-for-US-sale RSi was a hairy-enough beast that the flower vase could have been replaced with a holster, but this erases all of it. The lug nuts are pink. Does that mean your little sister will learn to change a tire? Maybe that’s what this is: an educational opportunity aimed at involving more women in the ownership experience. Not too many more, though. VW only plans on selling thirteen. Too bad the oil isn’t pink, too, or at least the filter. If the connecting rod bolts were pink, would we see a new demographic doing engine rebuilds?

Actually, it’s too bad more of the interior isn’t pink. Since when did Barbie drive a car with a black interior merely trimmed in pink? If you must build a Barbie special edition, at least do it right. If we remember correctly, Barbie’s interiors are always white with pink and purple trim. Not that we ever played with Barbies…. Um, but we saw a pink Corvette in our sister’s room once. Just once. When we were trying on those adorable lace-trimmed socks. They didn’t fit, and then she cried when we stretched them out. But now she’s bigger, so we don’t bring it up.

If you want a Barbie Beetle, too bad. Like we said, VW is only making thirteen, and not even one is making it out of Mexico. Of course, if you’d like to try to land one second-hand, or sneak one across the border, the MSRP is $24,368. Remember to bribe the border patrol, and try the tamales!

Future Autos- 2009 Lotus Esprit

We will have to wait until the end of 2008 to experience the new Esprit, but we are told it will be entirely new and the first Lotus to employ the “versatile vehicle architecture” aluminum construction technique that will allow other models to spawn from the Esprit’s bones. Internally, the new Esprit is known simply as MSC, for mid-engined supercar. Kimberly calls it the “jewel in the crown” and believes the new Esprit is crucial to Lotus’s future and reputation. Priced to compete with a Porsche 911 Turbo or the upcoming Audi R8, the next Esprit will be at least $130,000. Kimberly promises “a stunning, exhilarating car with high performance and vehicle dynamics superior to any other.”

BMW-2007 BMW Alpina B7

BMW doesn’t make an M version of the 7-series, but if it did, such a car would probably look at lot like the Alpina B7. And since Alpina-tuned BMWs still carry the factory warranty, the B7 is a lot like any other BMW on the showroom floor. There are a few differences from the standard 7-series, like the 21-inch wheels and the aero kit, but the B7’s looks are not just for show.

Under the hood is BMW’s familiar 4.4-liter V-8 with a centrifugal supercharger attached to bump the output to 500 horsepower over the standard 360 hp in the 750i’s 4.8-liter V-8. Torque is 516 pound-feet at 4250 rpm, a number that’s better than the 6.0-liter V-12 found in the 760Li. BMW claims a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.8 seconds for the B7, and that sounds conservative since we hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds in a 760i we tested. With a price of $115,695, the B7 is $40,000 more than a 750i, but $6,400 less than the long-wheelbase 760Li V-12. If that sounds like a relative bargain to you, hurry up and place your order – only 200 copies are coming stateside.

2007 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

For the ninth time in 29 years, Corvette will lap Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the official pace car of the Indy 500. And to celebrate the occasion, Chevrolet will build replicas to sell to collectors, Indy fans, and whomever else gets in line for one of the 500 special ragtops that Chevrolet will roll out of its Bowling Green, Kentucky, assembly plant during the next few months.
The official replica of the official pace car will feature Atomic Orange paint, gold ribbon stripes, a smattering of patriotic Indy 500 badges, sassy silver split-spoke aluminum wheels, and a small rear spoiler, the latter snagged from the Z06 parts bin. Interior modifications include black leather bucket seats with colorful Indy 500 embroidery and orange trim bits. The engine covers are also orange in hue.
Otherwise, the Indy editions are just like the run-of-the-mill Corvette convertible, albeit with the Z51 performance package, Onstar, navigation and Bose audio system standard. In other words, it’s loaded, which could explain the eye-watering $66,995 price ($68,245 with the paddle-shift autobox), including destination.

General Motors got off to a strong start this year when it took both the 2007 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards with its Saturn Aura and Chevrolet Silverado.

Interestingly, both vehicles won their respective categories by quite a margin, with the Aura tallying 205 points (the Honda Fit was the next closest with 176 points, and the Toyota Camry came in a distance third with 89 points), and the Silverado garnering 243 points (Mazda’s CX-7 grabbed 176, Ford’s Edge received 92).

For those keeping score at home, domestic automakers have won the Car of the Year award seven of the last 14 years, the Europeans have won four times, and the Japanese have taken home the hardware on three occasions.

Over the same period, the Truck of the Year award has been won by domestics nine times, while the Japanese have won three times, and the Europeans twice.

Under the hood of the next NSX will be the company’s most powerful engine ever, a V-10 with (as of right now) unknown power outputs. The company will also debut a new rear-wheel-drive version of the Super Handling all-wheel-drive system, too.

The design, called “Keen-Edge Dynamic” by designer Jon Ikeda, is in keeping with the company’s new exterior styling, as seen most recently in the Acura MDX and in recent concepts. While much of the ASC’s styling is a bit fussy, it’s a dramatic improvement over the Advanced Sedan Concept we saw at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The show-stopping Acura “Advanced Sports Car Concept” made its world debut today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. The dynamically styled concept provides a preview of the design direction for the successor to the Acura NSX.

Created to take exotic sports car styling to a new level, the concept is designed to incorporate a powerful front-mounted, V-10 engine and a new high-performance, rear-wheel-drive based version of Acura’s exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(TM) (SH-AWD(TM)).

“The Acura brand will always be a home for people who love to drive,” said Takeo Fukui, president & CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. “As we advance toward building a car like this, I can tell you it will feature advanced technology matching our passion for performance.”

The concept’s exterior demonstrates a dynamic fusion of advanced technology and emotion. The long, pronounced hood features deeply sculpted lines and embossed air vents, both of which hint at the powerful engine beneath. The exterior lines run the length of the body, creating a ribbon-like effect from the front headlights to the rear wheel arches, evoking a feeling of movement and power.

Although modern in its appearance, the Advanced Sports Car Concept retains the subtle cues associated with its predecessor, the NSX. The concept’s slim, LED headlights are pushed wide and designed to mimic the pop-up headlights found on the first generation NSX. Other styling hints include a modern take on wraparound rear taillights and the all black cockpit.

“Our intention was to design an exotic sports car that gracefully combines advanced technology and strong emotion,” said Jon Ikeda, principal designer, Acura Design Center. “The technical, machined surfaces and keen-edge design are balanced with sweeping curves and dramatic lines, all of which results in the ultimate exotic sports car.”

Wide and low to the ground with a 108.8 inch wheelbase, the concept is anchored by grippy 19 inch front and 20 inch rear performance tires which are mounted to custom billet-machined, polished aluminum wheels. Powerful, ventilated carbon ceramic brake discs and eight-piston calipers accent the wheels. Bold wheel arches and flares add to the concept’s aggressive appearance.

The low slung cabin is constructed entirely of tinted glass and sits flush against the body. Door handles are also flush mounted, allowing the sports car to retain a clean and aerodynamic appearance. The Advanced Sports Car Concept features a carbon fiber underbody and the rear is finished with aggressive quad exhaust pipes and integrated rear diffusers, further communicating its high performance potential.

The Advanced Sports Car Concept was designed by the Acura’s Los Angeles-based design team that will be based at the new Acura Design Center, opening this summer.

Compared to the big-selling (and big full-stop) Hummer H2, the H3 is more compact, but it's all relative; the H3 is about 50mm longer than the current Ford Mondeo, which makes it a manageable size for our roads. However it performs on tarmac, the announcement of production in a new facility in South Africa was accompanied by a focus on the H3's off-road abilities.

Standard is an electronically-controlled full-time four-wheel drive system with traction control, 'StabiliTrak' stability control and an optional locking rear differential. Thanks in part to the distinctive Tonka toy, 'wheel at each corner' design, Hummer makes some pretty impressive claims for the H3 off-road. For instance, if you drive as slow as 5mph, it can ford up to a depth of 610mm and can climb vertical steps or rocks up to a height of 407mm. Approach and departure angles are good too.

Though there will be an option of a five-speed manual gearbox alongside a electronically controlled four-speed automatic, the only engine option at launch will be a 3.7-litre inline five-cylinder petrol unit. Peak power is 241bhp and maximum torque is 242lb.ft so it shouldn't feel slow, but fuel economy could seriously hurt sales.

Super Cars: Mercedes McLaren SLR: '722 edition' is even faster

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Mercedes-Benz' SLR McLaren 722 Edition, shown to the public for the first time here in the economic powerhouse of the Middle East, evokes memories of Stirling Moss and co-driver Dennis Jenkinson's victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia – the classic Italian endurance race – driving a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR with the number 722 (denoting the car's start time of 7.22am).

Only 150 will be assembled at the McLaren Formula 1 works in Woking, England.

At the heart of the SLR 722 Edition is a 5.5-litre, supercharged V8 assembled by hand at the Mercedes-AMG engine workshops in Affalterbach, Germany, based on the "one man, one engine" principle, for which the company claims 478kW.
The 19" rims show off the red-painted Brembo brake callipers and the large brake discs, while individual carbon-fibre components have a clear-coat finish to emphasise the close ties with Formula 1.

Inside, the sports bucket seats are upholstered in a combination of leather and alcantara with distinctive red stitching, red seat belts and the 722 insignia on the head restraints. The steering wheel, gear and handbrake levers are trimmed in suede, with lots of carbon fibre throughout the interior.

The restyled instrument cluster has classic round dials with red backgrounds and an AMG lap timer system.

Mercedes S63 AMG has world's most powerful V8

Mercedes' performance division, AMG, has waved a magic wand over the latest S-Class to create the S63 AMG with signature body styling, alloy rims, AMG sports suspension and bigger brakes.

There's also serious muscle in the shape of a 6.3-litre V8 for which the company claims 386kW at 6800rpm and a tyre-shredding 630Nm at 5200.

AMG says it is the most powerful production V8 in the world and will take the hot S from 0-100km/h in 4.6 sec.

Top speed is, as usual, electronically limited to 250km/h.

2007 Honda Accord Coupe Concept

Honda's Accord Coupé Concept revealed in Detroit demonstrates the styling direction for the eighth-generation of the North American-spec car, the company's best selling model in the US.

Stylistically, the car is not a huge departure on current design trends and it won't win any medals for innovation, but is is a drastic change for Honda in America. Designers seem to have struck a balance in creating a car which manages to be upmarket, sporty and tasteful, though it won't alienate the Accord's conservative client base.

The result is achieved by the use of a wider stance with a long bonnet, steeply raked glass, and a sloped 'fastback' roofline which tapers off into the short rear deck. The front end features projector beam headlamps - reminiscent of Alfa Romeo's Brera and 159 models - with a tiny indicator light. The rear features square lights mounted high in the corners and a black lower section below the bumper. This section also houses quad tailpipes, recessed so far into the moulding that they are barely visible. Subtlety reigns.

Blacked out windows indicate that Honda is still working on the interior. It's a safe bet that the company will move in a bolder styling direction than the characterless design of the current model and incorporate additional technology to take on the competition.

Honda is equally cagey in providing details on the power source, other than to say it will be a petrol V6 utilising the company's i-VTEC technology along with Honda's next-generation Variable Cylinder Management system. It will likely continue to send power to the front wheels via a six-speed gearbox, though may be offered with Honda's Super Handling All Wheel Drive system. We can hope, but it is unlikely that Honda will import this car to Europe.

Noble M15

Noble punches well above its weight in the sportscar world. Owner/engineer/designer/guru, Lee Noble, launched a stab at the established supercar manufacturers at last year's British Motor Show. Sadly, the company couldn't quite stretch to a stand of its own, so the new M15 was relatively hidden away in the Supercar Paddock, but if Lee has his way, the establishment won't be able to hide from it so easily.

The new Noble M15 mates an elongated supercar shape with Noble's legendary chassis know-how and a 455bhp turbocharged powerplant. Claimed performance includes 0-60mph in only 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 185mph, which would put the M15 into competition with serious sportscars with Ferrari and Porsche badges on their bonnets. The Noble has an ace up its sleeve though, as it will cost a fraction under £75,000.

If you are familiar with the rest of the Noble range you may by now be muttering the word 'impractical', but Lee Noble has promised that the M15 will be a practical and (relatively) refined new car with room for luggage and everyday usability. Too good to be true? We'll see.

Lamborghini Grand Torro Concept

An off-road Lamborghini is not quite as ridiculous an idea as you might think. Sure, the current line-up have difficulty scaling speed bumps without grazing their front splitters, but back in 1986 Lamborghini launched the LM002, a hideous Hummer-style off-roader packing a 420bhp V12.

Viktor Tivadar Sass, the designer of the striking Grand Torro concept, is quick to distance his modern interpretation of an off-road supercar from the LM002. The Grand Torro was designed by the 27-year-old Hungarian for the 2006 Michelin Challenge Design and was displayed at the Detroit Motor Show in scale model form.

This designer has already won multiple design accolades, including four first places in the Camion Truck and Bus Magazine International Design Competition. Glancing through the images of the Grand Torro, it is not surprising to discover that Viktor previously worked for a computer game manufacturer. The fantasy world is a perfect place for a new car with the upper body of a supercar, and the lower half of a giant quad bike.
Look closely and you'll see that the gigantic alloys retain Lamborghini's characteristic five-hole design, though the wheel and tyre are moulded around each other for more reliable extreme driving in tough conditions, such as in the Dakar Rally Raid. We don't imagine Lamborghini will consider production.

2007 lamborghini Murcielago

Since the Murcielago was launched in 2001, I've often wondered if it is, in fact, possible to improve upon its style. It's as if Lamborghini has created the perfect looking car. Well I don't think the LP640 quite betters the clean lines of the standard version but, my god it's a good-looking car! The bumpers - if that's an appropriate way to refer to the works of art hung from the front and rear of the LP640 - have been redesigned to strike a more aggressive pose; the rear lights are also new, making the Murcielago as jaw-dropping at night as it is in daylight.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Lamborghini if it was all show and no go. As with the coupé LP640, the Roadster is fitted with a 6.5-litre 631bhp V12 that makes the already stupidly quick Murcielago insanely fast. The 0-62mph sprint takes just 3.4 seconds and top speed is a frantic 205mph. The torque band has also been paid particular attention, with the 487lb.ft available well spread throughout the rev range, making driveability far better.

The increase in power has obviously required a few tweaks elsewhere. The four-wheel drive system has been beefed up with stronger half axles, a new differential and a new six-speed gearbox has been fitted with the 'e-gear' programmable automated manual 'box available as an option. Handling has also been improved with the addition of uprated springs and stabilisers and the brakes have been overhauled.

For the even more flamboyant, Lamborghini has teamed up with Versace to offer a specially trimmed interior, complete with famous Greek 'fret' motifs on the seats - Maison Versace's distinctive emblem.

The Koenigsegg CCX

The CC range of supercars (CC stands for Competition Coupe) began in 1996 with the roll-out of the first prototype. The CCX celebrates the 10th anniversary of that event. However, to call it an anniversary special edition might be to undersell it somewhat, as the CCX is actually a new car designed to comply with US legislation.

To that end, a new front bumper has been designed to survive US collision tests, and includes enhanced brake cooling, fog lamps and side position lights required in the USA. The CCX is 88mm longer than its predecessor in order to comply with the US rear impact regulations and this in turn allows better cooling of the rear mufflers. The huge rear clamshell (made of pre-impregnated carbon-fibre/Kevlar like the rest of the body) also includes a new glass window to show off the engine.

And what a motor it is! The Koenigsegg CCX features a 4.7-litre V8 with twin superchargers that boost peak power to a scarcely believable 806bhp. Koenigsegg claims simply shocking performance figures of 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and a record-breaking top speed of over 245mph. The price; oh about £300,000 depending on specification...

Jaguar XK gets a new styling pack

There are many cars on sale that would benefit from a few styling tweaks, but the current Jaguar XK is certainly not one of them. It seems that Jaguar disagrees and from March, it will be possible to buy an 'Exterior Styling Pack' for the non-supercharged XK and XK Convertible.

Consisting of a front valance, rear valance, upper and lower mesh grilles (in a choice of bright or black finish), sill covers and tailpipe finishers (reminiscent of those on the Jaguar C-XF concept), the effect is distinct from the regular car, but not quite as aggressive as the XKR's exterior. All parts use existing fittings, so can be retro-fitted.

1953 Ford Sunliner Indy 500

According to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, Ford built over 2,000 of the Indianapolis 500 pace car replicas to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford. The museum article reports the Indy 500 replica was so popular that dealers were making knock-offs to meet the demand.

The original pace car driven on May 30, 1953, by William Clay Ford was given to the winner of the race Bill Vuckovich, who later sold or traded the car. Fortunately, the original car found its way to the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

Modern Muscle Dominates Detroit Auto Show

The North American International Auto Show is well under way this week in Detroit, and the conversation keeps coming back to one topic: muscle car heritage. With the Big Three (or Big Two-And-A-Half if you figure Chrysler being part of Daimler-Chrysler) set to dip below a combined 50% market share in the very new future, Ford, GM, and Chrysler are pulling out the stops and ponying up -- no pun intended -- new or updated muscle cars.

Dodge Challenger

The names are familiar and even some of the sheet metal rings a bell. The Dodge Challenger will be hitting the streets in 2009, just in time to compete with the Chevy Camaro. The concept Challenger sits on the same rear-wheel-drive chassis that carries the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, and Dodge Charger. The 6.1-liter engine in the concept pushes 425 horsepower and production Challengers will be available with both V6 and Hemi power. While not new for the '07 Detroit show, the Challenger is still making waves.

Chevy Camaro
The Chevy Camaro will also be available in 2009 and will be based on a platform shared with Australia's Holden. The production Camaro will reportedly start around $20,000 as a base model with potential V8 power. I suppose anything is possible. The US will see a Holden product before then, though. GM plans on bringing 50,000 Holden Commodore SS to the US to be rebadged as Pontiac G8s.

Ford Interceptor
Ford pulled out their Interceptor moniker made famous by the Crown Victoria police package and slapped it onto what is basically a four-door Mustang chassis shrouded with blocky sheet metal. Ford took the standard Mustang, elongated the chassis, and dug a 400 horsepower V8 out of the parts bin to power the car. In a nod to mileage and the environment, the V8 is E85 compatible.

$5.5 Million 1966 Shelby Cobra

The Barrett-Jackson auction has wrapped up and one of the big hits of the event was the 1966 Shelby Cobra "Super Snake" built by Carroll Shelby for his personal use. The Super Snake is a one-of-a-kind twin-supercharged car that would do 0-to-60 in "just over three seconds" according to Shelby. The buyer was Ron Pratt, who last year paid $4.32 million for the GM Futureliner

2007 Nissan Altima hybrid

Hot on the heels of the redesigned Altima comes Nissan’s first foray into the hybrid market. The greenie version of the Altima uses Nissan’s 158-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder connected to a planetary type CVT and two electric motors—technology licensed from Toyota—for a combined output of 198 hp. That’s up 11 hp on Toyota’s own Camry hybrid.

Estimates EPA fuel economy numbers of 41 city and 36 highway (Camry hybrid gets 40 city/38 highway) for the Altima hybrid when it goes on sale in early 2007. Nissan’s hybrid will initially only be sold in California and the seven Northeastern states that have adopted California emissions regulations. No official word on price yet, but it will likely be significantly more than a base Altima, which starts around $20,000. Close to the $26,520 starting point on the Camry hybrid is probably a good guess.

2007 Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale-SpyShots

Spy photographers have caught the new Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale on the streets of Maranello. In Ferrari-speak, Challenge Stradale means less weight—about 220 lbs. less—and more power. Much of that weight is shed inside, where carbon fiber is used extensively—notice the shot of the carbon-fiber interior door panel. Magnesium wheels also shed a few pounds. An additional 30 horsepower or so puts the F430 CS around 520, bumping the power-to-weight ratio from 6.9 lbs/hp for a regular F430 to just 6. That places the Challenge Stradale ahead of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 against which we tested a ”regular” F430 back in September, although the Ferrari won that comparo anyway. We expect to see this newest F430 going (quickly) to customers early in 2007.

2008 Cadillac CTS

Better Performance promised...

Always a competant, rear-drive handler but a few paces behind the leaders in the powertrain department—the 400-hp CTS-V notwithstanding—the first-generation CTS never mustered the strength to put up a serious fight in the compact sport sedan class, especially now that such slick sedans as the Infiniti G35 and, of course, the BWM 335i are dancing in the ring. The 2008 CTS, however, is lacing up its gloves backed by a much more comprehensive—and competitive—line of engines, transmissions, and now, a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

The current model’s 255-hp 3.6-liter V-6 will carry into ’08, and the 210-hp 2.8-liter six is dropped for the U.S. market. That makes the base motor for North America the 3.6, which gains 3 horsepower (to 258) and holds steady at 252 lb-ft of torque. Even bigger news, however, is an amped-up version of the 3.6 that, thanks to direct injection, produces a much juicier 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. All motors will be available with manual or automatic transmissions, each with six forward gears (last year’s auto was a five-speed unit). On-demand all-wheel drive will be offered with the 258-hp 3.6-liter-and-automatic combo.

Toyota FT-HS hybrid sports concept

Toyota’s concept promises everything we want in a car– power, performance, fuel efficiency, bold styling, and seating for more than two. One might think this miracle conveyance would be unobtainable to those without deep pockets. Wrong. The FT-HS concept adds a cherry-on-top, as it would be priced as an “attainable exotic” if it were produced. Rumor has it this concept might be fully attainable with Supra badging sometime around 2009 or 2010. We hope the result is more compelling than the like-powered Lexus GS450h which recently lost a sport sedan comparison test.

Honda Civic Concept-Mugen

So, there's really no forthcoming information about this car. It's red. It's got a tuner-rific body kit. It's called the "Road to Racing Concept" and that's about all Mugen will tell anyone. It looks a lot like last year's Dominator concept, but we have no idea if the Road to Racing Civic is sporting the supercharged KA20 underhood, like the Dominator. What exactly is meant by "road to racing" is also a mystery - it certainly doesn't look like a decontented homologation special. Do they mean that it's akin to the ACR Neon? We just don't know, and until somebody gives Mugen spokespeople a waterboarding, we'll have to be patient. It certainly looks like a snarly little thing.

Dodge Viper SRT-10 Mopar concept

While the new 600-horsepower Viper was attracting all the press at the Detroit show like so many moths to a flame, around back at the Dodge booth sat a tricked out beast dripping venom from its fangs, a showcase of what the Chrysler Group's aftermarket performance division Mopar has in store for the company's juiced up new flagship.

As impressive as the magic 600-horsepower figure is in the new Viper, it's no huge mystery how Dodge squeezed out the extra 90 horses over the old model. "No replacement for displacement" is the name of the game, and the Viper's engine is a monstrous 8.4-liter V10 from which Mopar tapped an additional 75 horses (thanks largely to better cooling) for a total of 675. (Yes, that's right... 675 horsepower. In one car.)

To go with the added juice, Mopar fitted an adjustable suspension and blacked-out 19" lightweight alloy wheels with accompanying Michelin rubber. The Mopar Viper was also displayed in a striking anthracite-gray paint job with an offset neon-red stripe running up the front, over the roof and on to the giant rear wing

Evo powered X-works concept revealed

British Midlands based X-Works Automotive is following in the footsteps of so many British cottage industry car-makers and building a car based on an existing production engine, in this case from a Mitsubishi Evo. They've spent the last 2 1/2 years developing the carbon chassis X-1. The 2,600 lb all wheel drive coupe comes equipped with a 350 hp two liter four cylinder, which can be upgraded to 500 hp.

Designers, Andrew Borrowman and Sean Prendergast, previously worked at Rover, Panther Cars and Grand Prix Engineering Services, and they seem to have done an admirable job with their new ride.The projected price of the new car will be £45,000 if they actually get them into production.

Audi releases info on R8

Mazda Roadster Mazdaspeed M’z Tune Concept

Mazda’s MX-5 has always been known as Roadster in Japan and barely a Tokyo Auto Salon goes by without some cool reworking of this lightweight, two-seat funster.

On the Mazda stand at this year’s Auto Salon custom/tuner show, this puppy in particular caught our eye. Developed by Mazda E&T, Mazda’s in-house skunk works in Hiroshima, this M’z Tune Concept gets dressed up with new high quality body aero parts plus full low-down suspension make-over with unique Bilstein dampers, sports muffler, original 18-inch wheels and remapped 2.0-liter twin cam to develop an extra 7-8 per cent power over stock.

Mazda says it would like to bring it to the States, but Japan is likely to get it first although officially, it’s “a concept.”. Very sweet….

Automotive News reported today that Dutch super car maker Spyker is cash-flow positive for the first time since its launch in 2000 on strong demand for its hand-made super cars.According to the report, the 43 (not a misprint) cars the Zeewolde-based company delivered in the first half of 2006 were enough to rocket the company into positive cash flow territory. In the same period a year ago, Spyker delivered eight cars. Apparently there must be more than a little bit of profit when you’re selling cars for more than a quarter of a million bucks.

This is what’s known in Japan as the Fairlady Z NISMO and key ingredients include a significantly stiffened up body plus aggressive aero tweaks, both over and under the car to improve stability and downforce.

BMW M6-Modified

Hamann’s latest offering is an uprated M6 with a stance-broadening ‘Edition Race’ bodykit and an extra 60bhp from the 5-litre V10 (now up to 561bhp) courtesy of a remap for the management system and a completely new exhaust system. Hamann also removes the speed limiter so that the tuned coupe now peaks at 199mph.

Suspension revisions drop the front end by 30mm and the rear by 25mm, but of more interest is the brake upgrade that encompasses discs, callipers, pads and hoses. Alloy wheel options range from 19 to 21in.

Hamann has also set to work on the Z4 M Coupe, with a modest 15bhp power increase, a bodykit and the company’s own alloys.

Legendary design house Zagato is celebrating Lancia’s centenary by recreating a 1938 Lancia Aprilia Sport. The project was undertaken by Andrea Zagato in appreciation of his firm’s longstanding relationship with Lancia.

Andrea’s crew didn’t have a lot to go on, rebuilding the car his grandfather Ugo built from just a pair of badly decayed black and white photos. The images were then digitized, after which CAD models and CNC machining tools were employed to “backwards engineer” schematics for the car. The car’s sensuous aeronautically-influenced sheetmetal was then beaten out on a solid machine buck.

Shown to the world this past Tuesday, December 5th, at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy, the introduction to North America of this freshened Astra – GM Europe’s real bread-and-butter all-star and the number two selling compact range of cars in Western Europe – continues the Opels-into-Saturns-into-Opels deal begun earlier this year with the Saturn Sky (Opel GT), the Vue (Opel Antara), and Aura (Opel Vectra). But the Astra takes it to a whole new level of commitment given the car’s very importance to the GM Europe portfolio. Granted, the humble goal for Astra sales in North America over the first twelve-month period, according to GM Europe chairman Carl-Peter Forster, is “anywhere between 10,000 and 20,000. Porsche has finally released shots of its 2008 Cayenne, ending many months of speculation and countless spy shots of cladding-happy prototypes.

Cayenne aficionados won’t be jarred by the new model’s looks, as they appear to be very measured updates of the current vehicle. The new front end goes some way toward differentiating V-6 and V-8 models, with changes including new headlamps across the range (including different units on the Turbo models with lateral signal indicators) and reworked air intakes. Out back, the Cayenne’s rump receives new bumper fascia that includes a pair of
exhaust pass-throughs and a new set of taillamps.The big deal, however, is inside the engine room, where a trio of new engines has taken up residence. The range-topping V-8 Turbo receives 500-horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the mid-level S also has a 4.8-liter V-8 (0.3 liters larger), this time delivering 380 horsepower and 370 pound-feet. Base-model intenders will need to make do with the 3.6-liter V-6 generating 290 horsepower.

The Euro-base price for the Cayenne is 43,300 Euros, while for the Cayenne S it is 55,800 Euros. The Cayenne Turbo is priced at 91,100 Euros. In Germany, the Cayenne costs 51,735 Euros, while the more powerful S version retails at 66,610 Euros. The top model Cayenne Turbo has a list price of 108,617 Euros (including 19 percent sales tax and country-specific requirements).

Lexus Previews 2007 Pebble Beach Edition SC

Lexus has announced the fourth in its annual string of Pebble Beach Edition SC special editions. As usual the tin-top convertible will debut in-the-metal at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, taking center stage at the Lexus Fashion preview on August 18.

Other features of the 2007 Pebble Beach Edition SC include special brushed-chrome badges inside and out, embroidered Pebble Beach logos on the floor mats, and 18-inch G-Spider alloys wrapped in summer or all-season run-flats.

The car will be available for purchase beginning next month, though the starting price has yet to be announced.

Subaru Introduces Japan-Only WRX STi spec C Type RA-R

Subaru is releasing yet another version of its iconic WRX, this one dubbed the “Impreza WRX STi spec C Type RA-R.” Can’t wait to see that one spelled out on a windshield header sticker.

The 2.0-liter flat four is tuned to deliver 320 bhp (at 6,400 rpm) and 318 ft-lbs. of torque at 4,400 rpm, thanks to a revamped turbocharger, exhaust system, and the necessary ECU tinkering that usually results from such changes.

Additional features include 18-inch multispoke wheels painted white (and wrapped in 40-series Bridgestones), and a 15mm lower ride height. Other exterior changes include red accent striping, a small roof-resident scoop, and a carbon fiber wing is optional.

Ferrari Enzo: Another one bites the dust

We’re beginning to wonder if Ferrari’s fabled Enzo isn’t going to get saddled with a “Death Car” medallion. After all, a startling number of these small-volume cars are being written off in spectacular fashion.

Suleiman Kermov, a seriously wealthy Russian parliamentarian was critically injured after his Enzo met its demise in a fiery crash. Kerimov is in critical condition in a Marseille, France hospital following the crack up the Promenade des Anglais, a Mediterranean boulevard in Nice.

The 41 year-old is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, with his $7.1 billion net worth holding down the No. 72 spot on Forbes magazine’s wealthiest list.

Callaway Returns With C16 Corvette World Premiere

It’s been a while since the automotive press has had an opportunity to chat up a Callaway Cars product, so welcome back, Reeves. The company’s C16 (so named because it represents the 16th car in the company’s history) packs a supercharged 6.0-liter LS2 V-8, which generates 616 horsepower and 582 pound-feet of torque.

The company claims that this Big Bertha will run to 60 miles per hour in just 3.3 seconds and trip the quarter-mile lights at 10.9 seconds. Given enough room, the C16 will bump its prow against 206 mph. This, while returning fuel efficiency numbers of 18 city and 28 highway.

Naturally, Callaway didn’t only address the car’s styling and power, it also went to work on the suspension, developing a new coil-over system with Eibach. The highly adjustable can be adjusted for ride height, corner weight, and pitch angle, and the aluminum-bodied dampers have remote-mount reservoirs and feature ten-way adjustability. Bespoke Callaway brakes (six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers) are hatted by Callaway Dymag wheels. These ultra lightweight wheels (19-inchers up front, and twenty inchers out back) are composed of magnesium and carbon fiber and cost a pretty penny in-and-of themselves.

For the upcoming Essen Motor Show, Germany’s Tune It Safe! program has called on supertuner Brabus to highlight the cause. The Tune It Safe! program was started only last year by Germany’s Federal Traffic Ministry and an association of local tuners to promote safe and legal tuning practices at enthusiasts. For its first year, another German tuner, TechArt, created the world’s fastest police car using a Porsche 911 S.

This year, Brabus’ CLS V12 S Rocket, touted as the world’s fastest sedan, will be featuring on stands. Once again wearing full police livery, the police CLS develops 730hp from the twin-turbo V12 and has a top-speed of 225.19mph.

SPY SHOTS: Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale

Ferrari aficionados and motorheads the world over have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale. The previous 360 CS took the 360 Modena coupe, put it on a diet and gave it some stripes. The result was a leaner and meaner prancing horse that put the 360 Challenge race-car into street-legal form. The very idea of taking the already superlative F430 and giving it the same treatment was simply mouthwatering.

This spy shot was snapped at the Nurburgring, which seems a little odd considering Ferrari owns three circuits of its own in Italy. The test mule shows most of the visible modifications to be featured on the F430 Challenge Stradale...expect the wheels to more closely resemble the magnesium CS rims up front than the stock 430 wheels at the back.

Until now the jury was out on whether the 430 CS would gain its performance edge "merely" by shedding extra mass or also be treated to a few extra cavallini, but the latest reports indicate that the 430's high-revving soprano V8 will get a boost to 520 horsepower (30 over the "ordinary" F430), thanks to a revised ECU and new exhaust system. Couple that with 200-lbs worth of liposuction thanks largely to selective use of carbon fiber body panels and you've got a recipe for satanic performance.

Abu Dhabi to build Ferrari World theme park

Oil affects everything automotive, but when the guys holding 8% of the world's oil supply begin to look for ways to reduce their dependence on oil, should we be concerned? At least they have the cash to make it fun and not painful.

Yes, a 2,500-acre island belonging to Persian Gulf emirate Abu Dhabi, will host Ferrari World, a "high-tech" theme park featuring simulator rides, roller coasters, an interactive museum anda theatre with an Italian-themed play and a race track, as part of the $40 billion dollar transformation into one of the world's premier luxury tourist destinations.

To the ruling family in Abu Dhabi, al-Nahyan, who owns five percent of Ferrari SpA, building Ferrari World was a natural decision. To support the increase in tourists visiting Yas Island, Abu Dhabi also plans to spend an additional $6.8 billion dollars to expand the Abu Dhabi International Airport, where Etihad Airways, the sheikdom's own airline launched in 2003, calls home.

Volkswagon Tiguan-LA Auto Show

The rather more interesting Tiguan name has since been confirmed as the proper title for the production version and this week at the LA Auto Show, VW revealed the Tiguan Concept pictured here, offering a very close look at how the new car will turn out when it finally goes on sale later in 2007.

There are no radical design aspects to the exterior. Instead, the Tiguan draws heavily from the new VW family look, though with its own stylised lights and dark-anodised metallic front grille. The production car is likely to retain the chunky wheelarches and overall shape though we guess that only the top of the range models will sport twin-exit exhausts and 19-inch alloys.

The concept's wheels are shod in special Continental tyres that feature the body colour 'baked into' the rubber, an element unlikely to make it onto showroom models. The tyre pattern is repeated on the leather-lined seats. Although the concept features a distinctive black, silver and orange interior, the basic architecture shows how the final car will look, with a bias towards sporty rather than utilitarian. Indeed, the photographs clearly show the Tiguan being driven in mostly urban environments, so don't expect it to be a leading off-roader.

Of more significance is the fitment of BLUETEC technology, which employs a modular concept of different systems to reduce emissions on diesel engines. One of these systems is the NOx storage catalytic converter which cuts nitrogen oxides by up to 90 per cent over most current diesel units, allowing cars such as the diesel-fuelled Tiguan to meet strict US emissions legislation. This is the first appearance of this system on a VW, having been developed in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz

Another fantastic Mazda concept sports car

At the LA Auto Show this week, Mazda unveiled the fourth concept car in a series that extends from the Sassou at the 2005 Frankfurt Show. The new car is perhaps the most futuristic of them all.

Nagare is the name for the new concept, meaning 'flow' in Japanese, or "embodiment of motion" in Mazda's interpretation. The purpose of this concept is not to preview a new production car, but to investigate how future Mazdas could be styled to appear dynamic, even when at a standstill.

The Nagare is nothing short of breathtaking, if not beautiful in the classic sense. The low roofline is accentuated by the wide track, huge wheelarches and equally dramatic alloys. Drama is added to the rearwards sloping design by 'flow' marks in the huge one-piece doors, a detail that is echoed in the shape of the rear lights.

Those doors tilt and swivel up to allow access to a cockpit with an unusual layout. Though the Nagare is a four-seater, the driver sits on his own centrally, with his passengers ensconced at the rear.

Obviously, the show car has no real powerplant, but the designers foresee a Mazda sportscar sold in the year 2020 as possibly being powered by a hydrogen-fuelled rotary engine.

Mazda will follow up the Nagare with new concept cars at the 2007 Detroit, Geneva and Tokyo shows, though not all of them will be so revolutionary. We're told that the Detroit concept is "is practical enough to produce in the next decade", while the Geneva car "will embody design ideas we expect to implement in the very near future."

Giugiaro's Mustang hotness revealed!

The powertrain upgrades deliver an estimated 500 horsepower, complete with a boost level of 11 psi from the Ford Racing supercharger. A high-efficiency Ford Racing aluminum radiator provides increased cooling capability to accompany the extra 200 horsepower provided under hood.
Under the car, the FR500C-inspired chassis tuning is accomplished with a tailored Ford Racing Handling Pack. This package, available through Ford Racing for the Mustang GT, adds new Dynamic-tuned dampers, lowering springs and anti-sway bars. The changes give the car a lower stance while sharpening handling response. The car rides approximately 1.5 inches lower than the production Mustang GT.

"The Mustang by Giugiaro drives as good as it looks," said Fabrizio Giugiaro. "After taking it to the limits on streets outside of Turin, I can honestly say this car was well worth the 30,000 hours of blood, sweat and tears that we invested to create a modern performance classic."

2009 Chevrolet Camaro Concept

The car is 186.2 inches long and rides on a 110.5-inch wheelbase. The wheels are 21s at the front and 22s at the rear, shod with monster 275/30 front and 305/30 rear tires, which should be able to corral the 400 horses from the LS2 6.0-liter V-8 engine powering through a six-speed manual transmission. The show car has a cobbled together chassis with an all-independent suspension, but if it makes it into production, it will use the so-called Zeta Lite architecture that will be shared with Holden in Australia. The good news for GM is that the architecture--while hardly cutting edge--is far more sophisticated than the live-axle Mustang. Insiders say that a $20,000 base model production car could use an inexpensive V-8 (the LS2 would come in a costlier model), so a V-6 version would be offered only to make the car easier to insure. The real car would have smaller wheels, but the overall diameter of the tires wouldn't be much changed. GM vice-chairman and product czar Bob Lutz apparently loves it and joked on the show stand "all I have to do is persuade this man"--referring to GM CEO Rick Wagoner--"to pay for it."

LA Auto Show: Honda Re-Re-REMIX Concept

Honda's press conference at the 2006 LA Auto Show saw the debut of the REMIX Concept, a purely hypothetical three-door Honda hatch that thinks it's a fighter plane (check out the wraparound cockpit-like windshield and roof-scoop). This little silver bullet reminded us a bit of the Volvo C30 in shape, and it's obvious from Honda's press release that the car's purpose is one and the same: fun to drive and practical to boot. The concept is said to be powered by a four-cylinder motor and swaps cogs with a six-speed transmission. A sport suspension and big brakes are also part of this theorethical equation. Though many see the REMIX and instantly think of a CRX successor, it doesn't sound like that's what Honda's thinking. Then again, a concept's chances for production are directly related to the reaction it invokes from a crowd, so if the REMIX is received well, you never know.

1050bhp Veyron rival

Americans traditionally favour muscle-cars over supercars, but the new Aero SC/8T built by Washington-based SSC (for Shelby Super Car, although Carroll Shelby has nothing to do with the project) seeks to combine elements of the two. It mates a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine producing a claimed 1050bhp with a Lambo-style scissor-doored bodyshell.

Limited to just 25 examples, the Aero has a much-modified GM-derived V8, force-fed by a single supercharger with twin intercoolers. Even in its basic guise this engine is claimed to produce 908bhp at 6600rpm and 771lb ft of torque at 5800rpm, while an upgrade to 'Ultimate' spec takes it beyond the magic four-figure power output.

Extensive use of carbonfibre for the bodywork and titanium for some of the mechanical components keeps weight down to 1233kg for the Aero and 1179kg for the Ultimate. Unsurprisingly, then, performance is claimed to be pretty brisk - 0-60mph in 2.9sec and a top speed of 250mph+, figures to rival the Bugatti Veyron, featured elsewhere in this issue.

SSC already has dealers in the US, and while there aren't yet plans to export the car, the company is considering shipping its demo model to Europe to take on the existing supercar elite. For more information visit www.sscautos.com

252mph Bugatti Gets Green Light

At a private viewing prior to the Monaco GP, Bugatti quietly announced the production version of its EB 16.4 Veyron. There are some fundamental changes to the car. A dramatic rear spoiler, hidden in the trailing-edge of the Bugatti's tapering rump, flips up both at very high speeds and also when the car brakes heavily - helping avoid the sudden rear-end break-away that plagued the original, smooth-tail Audi TT.
The final version also has a tweaked frontal air intake layout to cope with cooling problems that have proved trickier to iron-out than originally imagined. There are now also vents cutting into the front wings and the leading edge of the doors, indicating the extent of the cooling difficulties.
Production starts later this year and a few years' worth of cars have already been sold. Price? Rumoured to be around ΂£700,000, depending on the ΂£/euro exchange rate.

Lancer Evo IX - now faster than a Carrera 4S

London, England - Mitsubishi UK has unveiled a new, more powerful version of the iconic Lancer Evolution IX supercar - it's a development of the FQ-340 and features a 270kW version of Mitsubishi’s two-litre turbo engine.

The car is available now in the UK at £35 504 (about R470 000) and, Subaru says, reaffirms the Evo's reputation as an everyday supercar that offers pace and practicality at an affordable price.

It will have its debut at the British auto show in London and join a three-car Lancer Evolution line-up consisting of the FQ-300, the FQ-320 and the FQ-340, all of which will continue in production.

Jaguar's mid-sized S-Type will be dropped towards the end of 2007 and be replaced by an XF sports sedan being designed at the company's Product Development Centre at Whitley in central England.

The cars will be assembled at Jaguar’s Advanced Manufacturing Centre at nearby Castle Bromwich but Jaguar is not releasing images of the new car - yet.
"The Jaguar XF is a new sports sedan... daring and different," said Bibiana Boerio, MD of Jaguar Cars.

1100bhp Cobra!

Like the scoop on its bonnet, everything about the Weineck Cobra 780CUI is big. The capacity of its normally aspirated V8 is 12.9 litres and it develops 1100bhp at 7000rpm and 1298lb ft of torque at 5600rpm. It's claimed to accelerate from 0-124mph (200kph) in 4.9sec and from 0-186mph (300kph) in 10sec.

Essentially a road-registered dragster with Cobra replica bodywork, the German-built Weineck features a carbonfibre body, tubular steel spaceframe, and suspension components fashioned from aluminium and titanium. Its four-speed manual, rear-drive transmission is rated for up to 1475lb ft of torque, and, curiously, it has power steering. The Weineck runs on 18in rims shod with 255/40 ZR18 tyres up front and 315/35 ZR18s astern.

This is effectively the new Peugeot 407 Coupe. Despite being called the Prologue Concept Car, it is very clearly related to the 407 saloon and is understated enough to make production. Designed in-house (the 406 was penned by Pininfarina) it has subtle gills at the front and a very discreetly integrated rear bootlid spoiler. Only the 19in wheels look slightly out of place. It is powered by a V6 HDi diesel linked to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox, but the suspension is lifted directly from the standard 407 saloon.

Student concept suggests nearly 300mph on batteries!
Created by three students at the International School of Design in France, this is the R-Zero concept. The work of Franck Levivier, Remi Marchand and Pierre-Olivier Wagner, it's their vision of the supercar of the future. The all-electric R-Zero uses lithium-ion batteries driving electric motors in each of the wheels. They produce the equivalent of 1091bhp – enough in a virtual world to propel the Audi-badged coupe from 0-60 in less than 3.0sec and on to a top speed of 286mph.

The Lotus Sport Cadena Race Team walked off with the 2006 British GT3 team prize and Lotus is celebrating with a special edition. Called the Exige S British GT Special Edition, in standard trim it’s pretty much an Exige S with stripes, stickers, lightweight alloys and fancy upholstery – yours for £35,995.

However, tick the box for the optional (£4995) GT Pack and what you zoom off in is essentially a revival of the 240R, itself a limited edition that Lotus claimed wouldn’t become a production car once its run of 50 was sold…

Mazda says its Mazda3 MPS will be the fastest, best-handling, best-braking model in the Mazda3 range when it goes on sale in South Africa late in 2007 – in fact Mazda compares its handling and roadholding to the MPS, RX-8, MX-5 roadster and the recently launched Mazda6.

The Mazda3 MPS will be marketed as a single, fully specified model, the flagship for the range and for the Mazda brand in the C segment.

Pininfarina Offers To Design-Your-Own Super Car– For A Price

With the success of the James Glickenhaus-commissioned Ferrari P4/5 currently making the show circuit, Pininfarina is expanding its one-off business for wealthy customers who want to create their own dream car. According to Auto Express, the design firm says it now has seven Chinese clients who want something other than off-the-rack luxury and performance cars, and more could be on the way.

As the Glickenhaus is rumored to have cost around $4 million, this return to coachbuilding is hardly for everyone… but it surely enriches the automotive landscape.

Volvo C30 Concept

Volvo spokesmen insisted that the MINI Cooper wasn't a target when they penned the upcoming C30, but it's the first thing we thought of when we saw it, and we weren't alone. The smallest Volvo (reminiscent of 2001's Volvo Safety Concept Car) is likely to debut in production form at the Paris show this September, and we can only hope that there's an R version with the concept's 260-hp turbocharged five-cylinder engine.

2008 Cadillac CTS Sedan Spyshot

Cadillac's future version of its BMW 3-series competitor is undergoing testing for a 2007 unveiling at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We make a note to say this is the sedan (CTS got its original name from an acronym based loosely around the idea of “Cadillac Touring Sedan”), but there are prototypes of a CTS-based coupe—either called CTS Coupe or CTC—alive and well within the secret halls of GM ’s design studios in Warren, Michigan. These shots of the CTS show us a revised and larger front grille opening, aggressive proportions and the car’s familiar C-pillar shape. Also note the lack of tack-on parking lot protectors on this prototype’s doors. If what we’re seeing here is a clear indication of production trim, Cadillac could have a winner on its hands.

2009 Audi A7 Spyshots

This computer-enhanced shot shows Audi’s upcoming A6-derived rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLS, expected to be called the A7. With the CLS receiving kudos for its coupe-like silhouette, it seems everyone is trying to make four doors look like two. Just as the CLS slots in between E- and S-class models, the A7 will be positioned between Audi’s A6 and A8 sedans in both size and price. The styling will be significantly more dramatic than any other Audi sedan, with a chopped roofline, an aggressive front-end design with a radical headlight treatment, and hidden rear door handles. Expect the A7 to debut sometime in 2008.

The engine is a twin-turbo six-liter W-12 that generates 552 horsepower. The transmission is a six-speed ZF automatic with redundant shift paddles. Top speed, roof up, is 195 miles per hour. Top speed, roof down, is 190. Reaching sixty mph from zero is accomplished in 4.8 seconds, despite a curb weight of 5500 pounds. This is not a slow car. Both coupe and convertible are equipped with the largest disc brakes available on any car in the world, 16-inch diameter in the front, 13.2 inches in the rear. Like the virtually transparent all-wheel-drive system, the ZF automatic transmission is extremely sophisticated, and there is no advantage to be gained in using the manual-shift option.

We love the convertible but prefer the coupe. Fast driving in an open car is great fun, but fast driving in a great GT coupe—like the Bentley Continental GT—is magic. Besides, with the money saved by buying the Continental GT coupe instead of the convertible, we could buy a mighty nice motorcycle

Troubled TVR Readying 600bhp Typhoon?

For all of its apparent financial and employment wranglings as of late, TVR is reportedly set to launch a new 600 bhp supercar at the Geneva Motor Show next year. Dubbed “Typhoon,” the top-dog TVR will use a supercharged variant of the Speed Six engine, and the body will be made of carbon fiber.

Jeep sketches out TrailHawk concept for Detroit

The Los Angeles Auto Show hasn’t even come and gone, and the sneak-peaks are already afoot for Detroit’s North American International Auto Show.

To that end, we present this official rendering of the Jeep Trailhawk, a concept based on the new-for-2007 Wrangler. Not much information is available on the SUV, but DCX promises that it melds the core features of the venerable off-roader with the “sophistication of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.” The press blurb (after the jump) also says that the Trailhawk will bring with it “a new approach to open-air freedom,” so count on some sort of interesting removable roof mechanism. We’re not sure what to expect—perhaps Jeep is toying with an automatic folding hardtop?

GMC to abandon minivan segment?

According to the Detroit News, General Motors appears set to euthanize its minivan lineup.

The automaker’s current offerings in the segment, which include the Chevrolet Uplander, Buick Terraza and Saturn Relay, have been roundly criticized by pundits and met with lackluster sales. GM had plans to debut a new string of models as early as 2009, but they have apparently been axed.

GM is betting heavily that its new lineup of three-row crossovers, which includes the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave.

While not officially confirmed, this news comes on the heels of Ford’s decision to scrap their Freestar and Mercury Monterey twins, as well as conjecture that DaimlerChrysler has scuttled its next Pacifica.

Do these prototypes indicate McLaren's involvement with the Viper project?
This is one group of prototypes that all our sources are stumped on. And there wasn't just one powertrain prototype here - there were at least four of these red-hot Vipers with a vinyl-covered camouflage hood and various wires and test gauges - but nothing could hide the huge vents on the hood, and we managed to get excellent views.

Sources are telling us NOT to expect a 2007 Viper - that model-year will be "skipped" and the '08 models will make an early appearance within the first quarter of 2007. And we do know that Dodge wants to expand the horsepower in the Vipers, but the 'what' and 'how' are currently just rumours. One rumour is that McLaren is involved with the Viper project and is tweaking a V10 to put out nearly 650-horsepower!

Maserati is building a rival to Ferrari’s extreme FXX track car-and unlike the MC12 racer it’s based on, private buyers will be able to order one.
The only catch is the MC12 Corsa costs a Bugatti Veyron rivalling 1 million euros plus tax, and you will either have to be invited to buy one or convince its maker you are not just after one to turn a quick profit. Maserati expects to produce 12 of the Enzo-based track cars per year. It’s not road legal, and unlike the MC12 GT1 has not been homologated for racing...full article here
